#ooooh i love this SO they’re both so GREAT in this exchange#it’s interesting to me particularly because the doctor#though he loves and uplifts and exalts and idolizes his companions#in many ways he generally doesn’t have very high expectations of them?#he’s thrilled when they do something clever and certainly i don’t mean#he’s SURPRISED when they save the day but he doesn’t exactly…. rely on them#per se and he manhandles them a lot int he process of getting them#to where he wants them to be to do what they need to do#but when it comes down to it he’s not surprised when clara#steals his tardis keys and throws them into the volcano#he’s not surprised when amy and rory decide they don’t really need him anymore#and he rarely asks for them when he needs them – they just tend to know#but RIVER. he asks for river#and he EXPECTS her to come and he clearly has faith in her#to be CRUCIAL to his machinations because even#if it’s a snap judgment borne out of frustration/upset#he BLAMES her here. he needed her and he admitted it and she didn’t come#and he’s hurt and disappointed by that in a way he isn’t usually??#like i feel like if he had dropped a line to amy while she and rory were doing their thing#and they hadn’t been able to come or hadn’t wanted to#he would’ve been sad but it wouldn’t’ve been a BETRAYAL#river is part of his life in a way others usually aren’t (via queenriver)
